THE IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

Captain Temo Verboonen summed it all up in a single word in describing the overall fishing this past week in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo.  He described it as, "Incredible" in the very near off shore waters, just west of Ixtapa, where the sailfish were prolific and providing multiple strikes for the anglers and many releases.  Adding to the hot bite actions from the sailfish were plenty of smaller stripers and some quality sized dorado adding to the daily action that literally extended from about 5 miles to the west of Ixtapa and on out to the 15 mile mark.  Rigged baits were unquestionably the baits of choice but even with that, there were occasional billfish being caught fishing inshore tight to the white rocks at the island as the anglers were trying to catch a few jack crevalles using poppers.  The area around Troncones was producing a good bite on Sierras and bonitos.  Overall, the action was as good as it gets and the anglers were kept very busy with the fishing action.  Adding to the good fishing was the calm season and very nice overall weather conditions for the area.

IZ Climate:  Near picture perfect weather for the visitors with an average of 83 degrees daytime temps and 70 degrees average for the nights.  Humidity ratio holding about 69% average.

Sea Conditions:  Tropical surface breezes flowing in from the southwest at about 8.75 mph average.  Water temps inshore at 80 degrees and rising to 81.5 in the near off shore waters.

Best Fishing Areas:  Starting at about 5 miles west of Ixtapa and stretching out o the 15 mile mark for the billfish and dorados.

Best Bait/Lures:  Freshly caught baits for rigging were the favorite bait and producing all the action an angler wanted with plenty of daily billfish releases.
