THE IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

According to our Zihuatanejo area reporter, Captain Temo Verboonen, it was kind of a split week's fishing action with the first part of the week's action very good and the brighter the moon got, the slower the action became.  During the early part of the week the sailfish and stripers were eager to bite and even the dorado came to offer their share of bite action, too and better yet, the bite was right at the 8-mile mark from the entrance to the Bay.  The blue water is within a mile of the shoreline but the inshore fishing was very slow,  "We saw very few fish all along the coast from Valentin to Salidita.

IZ Climate:  It was one of those 50-50 partly cloudy & sunny week with a bright and sunshiny weekend for the anglers.  Daytime temps holding at 86 degrees and nights at 72.8 average.  Humidity Level at 69.8% average.

Sea Conditions:  Surface breezes flowing mostly from the westerly directions at an average of 6.8 mph over mostly calm seas.  Inshore and offshore sea temps varied a single degree from 83 to 84.

Best Fishing Area:  During the early part of the week the best fishing started right about the 8-mile mark and seemed to diminish with the full moon conditions.

Best Bait/Lure:  Rigged baits were working exceptionally well for he billfish and the dorado.

Bait Supply:  Very good supply of bait with freshly caught rigging baits available on a daily basis and provided gratis with the charters.  Live bait is $5.00 per dozen.

THE IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

Another terrific fishing report from Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo reflecting very good marlin and sailfish action in the off shore waters, starting at about 15 miles or so and the yellowfin tuna were holding well at the 40 mile mark with 20-40 kg. tuna.  The inshore action, especially along the beaches at valentin river, were offering good roosterfish and jack crevalle action, along with a few Sierras and bonitos.  According to Captain Chiro Barrigan and his first class mate, Luis, aboard he 35' Bertram sportfisher, "Bloody Hook", reported a 2 sailfish day and a single 20 lb. yellowfin tuna for their angler, Mr. Ken Kinlien earlier in the week and followed that up with an off shore sailfish and then moved in shore for , jack cravelle and many bonitos with Mr. Jesse & friends on a 2nd day.  Overall, the fishing and the weather have been providing very well for the anglers.

IZ Climate:  Air temps varied from 74 nights to 91 daytime highs and  67.5% humidity level.  Mostly sunny and warm with a few scattered clouds mixed in for the week.

Sea Conditions:  Water temps for the in shore waters holding well at 83-84 and a 67.5 average humidity level.

Best Fishing Area:  Starting at about 15 miles for the billfish and then, moving out to about 40 miles for the yellowfin tuna.

Best Bait/Lure:  Rigged baits working very well for the billfish and live baits working well for the roosterfish and jack crevalle.

Bait Supply:  A very good supply of bait this past week and making it easier to have plenty of baits for rigging and live bait for the roosterfish and jack crevalles.

XTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

WOW!  What a huge difference a week can make in the fishing results in a single area.  Ou report for the week was a complete reverse of last week and the fishing changed in a full circle and spiraled upward like a championship football being tossed to a winning touchdown receiver.  Captain Temo Verboonen, our on-location reporter, had only good things to say about the past week from the proximity to the Bay, the water color, water temps and the overall fish bite fo both, inshore and offshore.  You could almost see the smile on his face by reading his report. He reported a great week for the off shore anglers.  The billfish were very cooperative almost all week with a good bite on the blue marlin and better bite on the sailfish, with the action starting at about the 15-mile mark, just as the water changes to clean blue.  Really a good time for using a fly rod for the sailfish.  The inshore fishing was also very good for the jack crevalle and for roosterfish by Valentin River and they are mixed in with the Sierras and bonitos.

IZ Climate:  Air temperatures varied from 74 nights to 91 daytime highs and a 67.5 average humidity level.  A mostly sunny and near perfect weather &  fishing week.

Sea Conditions:  Sea temps at 83 in shore to 86-87 off shore.  Tropical surface breezes varied from near calm mornings to about 7-8 mph in early afternoons.  Good clarity at about 15 miles.

Best Fishing Area:  Starting at about 15 miles, where the water clarity changes from off color greenish to perfect blue and the fish are eager to bite.

Best Lure/Bait:  Fresh baits for rigging and live baits are working very well for the anglers as are artificials & streamers.

Bait Supply:  Excellent for both, freshly caught baits for rigging and live baits at $5.00 per dozen.

THE IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

Last week was the International Sailfish Tournament from Zihuatanejo that reflected a total of 170 boats entered into what turned out to be difficult fishing and a ways off shore, starting at about the 28 mile mark.  Everything inside that range was green or off colored waters and pretty much void of the billfish.  As it was, the overall fishing was pretty slow for sailfish and marlin and the finality of the event reflected the 1st place winner, taken aboard the sportfisher, "Costa Brava", to be a 38.8 kilo (85.36 lbs.) sailfish, followed by a 35.4 kilo, (77.88 lbs) taken aboard the "Oceana", for 2nd and a 34 kilo, (74.8 lbs.) taken aboard the sportfisher, "Borracho", for 3rd place.  Largest marlin was an 80.6 kilo, (177.32 blue Marlin), taken aboard the sportfisher, "El Vikingo".  No other fish were reported in the event to qualify.  The inshore waters, in addition to being off-colored and cooler, was rough, bumpy and windy for the most part and void of fishing action and very little sea life in general.

IZ Climate:  A few high passing clouds for most of the days and a partly cloudy day for Monday  but overall, lots of sunshine through the week with temps varied from 73 nights to 90 daytime highs and an average of 68.5 humidity level.

Sea Conditions:  Tropical surface breezes flowing in from the westerly directions and varied from fairly calm mornings to 9-10 mph by late mornings thru afternoons.  Rough and bumpy waters for the inshore areas.  Water clarity was green to aout 28 miles or so and overall, the temps were down a degree or two, reflecting 80 degrees inshore and not much better for the off shore waters.

Best Fishing Area:  Clear water started at about 28 miles off shore where the bite actually started.

Best Bait/Lure:  Rigged trolling baits proved to be the best bet for the winning fish, including the smaller blue marlin.

Bait Availability:  Remained excellent for the entire fishing event and week with good quality fresh caught rigging baits and a good availability for live bait, too, at the $5.00 per dozen rate.

IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

A much better fishing week was reported by Captain Temo Verboonen, along with an increase in anglers at the pier in the mornings.  The full moon seemed to have little effect on the catching for a change and the marlin and sailfish were cooperating on a daily basis for the fleet and even the tunas returned to add to the action.  The inshore fishing picked up considerably and was offering good roosterfish and jack crevalle action on the spinning tackle.  Temo added, it was a great weather week with mosly clean waters from the shorteline to the off shore wates and calm sea conditions.

IZ Climate:  A few passing high clouds that turned to sunshine and provided excellent temps that varied from 70 nights to 93 daytime highs and a 59% humidity level.

Sea Conditions:  Sea temps varied from 82-83 inshore and 84-85 off shore.  Surface breezes mostly from the westerly directions that varied from near calm mornings to about 9 mph in the afternoons.

Best Fishing Area:  Started at about 8 miles offshore, as the water turned crystal clear and blue.

Best Bait/Lure:  Rigged baits were working very well or the billfish and the tunas.  Roosters and jacks biting live baits and artificials for the inshore action.

Our Local Reporter:  Captain Temo Verboonen, oener/operator of the super panga, Secuesto de Amor.

XTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

According to Captain Temo Veroonen, the close in yellowfin tuna are pretty much gone from the area and left in the belly of the tuna seiners that let nothing much but the scales.  The few that successfully escaped have moved farther offshore from their 6 miles of last weeks action.  There are more marlin strikes right now in the 220-275 lb. ranges and that action starts just past the 8-mile mark where the greener water turns to deep blue and clear.  The inshore fishing has perked back up again and is fine for jack crevalles, Spanish mackerel, (aka Sierras) bonitos and a few roosterfish in the mix.  Not too many anglers showing up at the dock in the mornings.

IZ Climate:  Air temps very good and varied from 78 nights to 94 daytime highs and a 46% average humidity level.  Some morning clouds and high level clouds but followed with an abundance of sunshine for the area.

Sea Conditions:  Sea temps stable at 81 inshore to 83 offshore.  Sea surface conditions enjoying soft westerly breezes in the 6-7 mph ranges.

Best Fishing Area:  The billfish are staring at about 8 miles offshore and at the edge of the water clarity change from greenish to pristine blue.

Best Bait/Lures:  Rigged baits and bigger lures getting the best action for the billfish.  Live baits working well for the inshore fishing for jacks and roosterfish.

Bait Supplies:  Remain plentiful and readily available.  Fresh rigging baits provided with the charter and live baits are $5.00 per dozen.

IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

According to our local reporter for Zihuatanejo, Captain Temo Verboonen, the forthcoming full moon has apparently slowed the fishing for this area and he reports a very slow billfish week with many boats returning with blanks for their day.  The overall sea conditions have been near perfect, calm waters with superb clarity, but a bit cooler water temps for this area.  The first half of the week was excellent fishing by the white rocks, (Morros de Potosi) that provided big schools of jack crevalles, along with some good roosterfish in the mix.  Adding to the bite action was bonitos and some amberjacks.  Live bait was working best for this area.  Overall, it's been a terrific weather week but the full moon entry has dampened the catching.

IZ Climate:  A mostly cloudy week but warm days and temps that varied from 69 nights to 84 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions:  Sea temps stable at 82-83 degrees from inshore to offshore waters.  Very light surface breezes at about 2 mph flowing from the northeast to the northwest.  Calm waters and good fishing conditions, albeit, the bite did slow up as the moon got brighter.

Best Bait/Lure:  Rigged baits worked best in the off shore waters for the slowing billfish bite and live bait worked best for the inshore fishing around the white rocks area for jack crevaqlle, amberjack and roosterfish.

Best Fishing Area:  There was no mention of any specific area for the off shore waters but the inshore area was in the area surrounding the white rocks, (Morros de Potosi).

Bait Supply:  Remained good for both, fresh rigging baits and live baits.  Live baits being sold at $5.00 per dozen paid direct to the bait vendor at time of receipt.

THE IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

The fishing season is slowing down a little or at least it seem so because there is less anglers at the docks each morning.  That's not to say that the catching is slowing, albeit, less boats usually mean less fish in the reports.  Also, the diminishing of anglers at the pier each morning tends to make the local skippers think their season is about over even though the fishing is still plenty good enough.  The offshore waters was still producing good strikes on the sailfish with action starting in the 7-8 miles zone and their was another area farther off shore, too.  Only a couple of blue marlins reported for the week and unfortunately, no dorados and no yellowfin tuna.  Inshore, there was still a pretty good bite on the bigger roosterfish but only a few of the bigger jack crevalles.

IZ Climate:  A mostly sunny and warm week with near picture perfect weather.  Air temps varied from 69 nights to 87 daytime highs and an average humidity level of 68-69%.

Sea Conditions:  Near excellent for fishing with sea temps from 83 inshore to 84 offshore.  Surface breezes tropical and flowing lightly from the westerly directions at about 7-8 mph.  Nearly flat calm mornings.

Best Fishing Area:  The sailfish bit well last week starting at about 7 miles or so and there was another area farther off shore.  Only a couple of blue marlins reported and no dorados or tuna.  Inshore was still treating the anglers well with bigger roosterfsih and Jack crevalles.

Best Bait/Lures:  Live bait was best for the inshore action with the Roosterfish and jack crevalles.  The off shore fishing was better with the fresh caught and rigged trolling baits.

Bait Supply:  Terrific bait supply for both, fresh baits for rigging that are supplied with the charters and live bait at $5.00 per dozen, paid direct to the bait vendors.

Our local Reporter:  Captain Temo Verboonen, owner & operator of the super panga, Secuestro De Amor.

IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

According to our on-the-spot reporter, Captain Temo Verboonen, the offshore fishing for billfish provided a much better bite this past week that even included a couple of black marlin, many more bites for sailfish and blue marlin and a good showing for the yellowfin tuna that were biting on regular baits.  Better yet, the fishing was close in, starting at about 3 miles out front of Zihuatanejo Bay.  Also, the inshore fishing action has greatly improved this past week and produced good action for the roosterfish and jack crevalles.  Overall, the fishing rebounded nicely and provided anglers with excellent fishing.

IZ Climate:  Overall, it was a good weather week except for a single bad weather day of wind and rain and rough seas.  Air temps varied from cooler nights and mornings at 64 degrees to 81 daytime highs that included mostly sunny days.

Sea Conditions:  Sea temps holding at 84-85 degrees from inshore to offshore.  One day of rough, windy and rainy conditions that are unusual for this time of year.  Otherwise, the surface flow was mostly varied from nearly calm to 4-5 mph.

Best Fishing Area:  Starting at about 3 miles offshore in front of Zihuatanejo Bay.

Best Bait/Lure:  Rigged baits working well for the billfish.  Live baits working well or he yellowfin tuna offshore and also for the roosterfish and jack crevalles inshore.

Bait Supply:  Remains plentiful for both, fresh rigging baits and live baits.  Live bait is $5.00 per dozen paid direct to the bait vendor at time of receipt.

THE IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

The off shore fishing had slowed up a bit and was in the off again and on again mode for the entire week.  One day, the fish would bite well and the next day would be difficult and turned into a have and have not scenario for many boats and anglers.  The sailfish seemed to be concentrated in small areas.  Some days, the yellowfin tuna would show up and bite well, too, along with the bigger marlin.  The inshore fishing was slow for all fish as the water turned green and the fish moved off shore and into the deeper and cleaner waters.  We saw big schools of bonito at the 11 mile mark in the afternoon and that should bring the bigger fish back into the area for the anglers.  Once the inshore water regains clarity and bait schools, we will begin to see the roosterfish and jacks back to the inshore waters.

IZ Climate:  A partly cloudy week with scattered sunshine and very comfortable days and evenings.  Air temps varied from 71 nights to 92 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions:  Surface flow mostly from the westerly direction and ranged from calm to 7 mph.  Water temps varied from 83-84 degrees from inshore to off shore.

Best Bait/Lure:  Rigged baits were still working well for the billfish.  The tuna were best on the colored feathers.

Best Fishing Area:  There was no specific area that was more productive.

Bait Supply:  Good bait supply for the freshly caught baits for rigging and live baits at $5.00 per dozen.

THE IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

The full moon has made the strong off shore bite a little more difficult for the anglers and this past week was a more of the have and have nots for the week.  Still, though, the marlin and sailfish did cooperate closer in toward the Bay and while we looked at fair amounts of yellowfin tuna, they were not being helpful with the bite and the dorado have completely disappeared.  The inshore fishing remains very good for the big roosterfish and big jack cravelles but the bonito and Sierra were being stubborn and not eager to bite.  Look for the bite to regenerate as the moon phase grows darker in the coming week.

IZ Climate:  Varied air temps from 69 nights to 92 daytime highs and a 63% average humidity level.  Am amazing week of great weather with a few days of partly cloudy conditions but overall a generous mix of sunshine and pleasant weather.

Sea Conditions:  Sea temperatures stable at 84 to 84.5 from inshore to off shore waters.  Tropical surface breezes flowing mostly from the westerly directions and varied from flat calm to 8-9 mph.  Excellent fishing conditions overall.

Best Fishing Area:  Starting at about 8-9 miles out front of the Zihuatanejo Bay for the billfish.

Best Lures/Bait:  Rigged baits were working consistently well for the billfish and live baits were doing very nicely on the roosterfish and jack crevalles.

Bait Supply:  Remained very good for the freshly caught baits for rigging and plenty of live bait at $5.00 per dozen.

THE IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

The fishing from Zihuatanejo has been providing exceptional catches in the offshore waters that have included some quality sized yellowfin tuna and a terrific bite on the sailfish.  According to Captain Chiro Barragan and his mate, Luis, operators of the 35' Bertram sportfisher, "Bloody Hook", have been providing their anglers with some sensational fishing in the area about 18 miles out front of the white rocks.  According to Chiro, they spent 2 hours & 40 minutes landing a 180 lb. yellowfin tuna with the Mattson charter group and on their 2nd charter day they landed/released 5 sailfish and lost a couple more.  We were in a "hot spot" and the fish wanted to bite, preferring the rigged goggle eye baits.  A couple of the boats fishing the same area landed some extra large yellowfin tuna also and landed a 300 lb. blue marlin.  According to Captain Temo Verboonen, most of the boats were successful with multiple strikes on a daily basis but even with that, there were a few that drew blanks, too.  The inshore fishing has been terrific for the big roosterfish and big jack crevalles by Pantla Beach, next to Ixtapa Island, along with some bonitos and Sierras, too. Lots of anglers on the per everyday now and anglers are returning very happy.

IZ Climate:  Air temps varied from 70 nights to 93 daytime highs and a 50% average humidity level.  The weather has been like the fishing, just sensational.  Mostly sunny and warm days and very pleasant evenings and nights.

Sea Conditions:  Tropical surface breezes flowing mostly from the westerly directions and ranged from near calm to 7-8 mph.  Sea Temps stable at 83-84 degrees.

Best Fishing Area:  The better bite are was out front of the White Rocks, starting at about 18 miles or so.  Lots of bird life and surface action in this area.

Best Bait/Lure:  Rigged Goggle Eye baits were working best for the tuna and sailfish.

Bait Supply:  An excellent supply of bait, both live and fresh for rigging.  Rigging baits are provided gratis as part of the charters and live bait are sold at $5.00 per dozen, paid direct to the bait vendor at time of receipt.

HE IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

The fishing this past week had all kinds of action that varied from slow to medium to the greatest of fishing days.  According to Captain Temo Verboonen, it was a variety catch week that consisted of lots of sailfish, a black marlin, a few blue marlin a few dorados and some trophy yellowfin tuna that moved inside to the 30 mile mark and averaged about 50 kilos, (110.00 lbs.).  The inshore action was equally productive and produced excellent catches on roosterfish and the bigger jack crevalles.  All in all, it was a wonderful fishing week and the anglers were returning happy and with smiles for their fishing days.

IZ Climate:  A mostly sunny and warm week with an occasional cloud here and there and air temps that varied from 71 nights to 92 daytime highs and an average humidity level at 65%.

Sea Conditions:  An excellent week with mostly flat calm seas.  Water temps were stable and remained at 83-85 degrees from inshore to offshore waters.  Surface breezes flowed westerly and varied from near calm to about 9 mph, just enough surface breeze to keep the fish excited.

Best Fishing Area:  The fishing was very good from inshore to the offshore and ranged from just a few miles out to 30-plus miles out for the yellowfin tuna.

Best Lures/Bait:  Sailfish and dorado bit very well on the rigged baits and the black and blues liked the bigger artificials and bigger rigged trolling baits.  Yellowfin bit on live baits and artificials.

Bait Supply:  Excellent through the week.  Plenty of fresh baits for rigging and plenty of live baits for the inshore and off shore action.  Live baits at $5.00 per dozen paid direct to the bait vendors.

THE IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

It was a much improved fishing week or the Zihuatanejo area as the moon phase grew darker by the day.  The billfish were back to biting much better and some dorado were getting in on the bite action too.  We also had a very good 1-day bite on the yellowfin tuna, adding good action for many anglers on that single day.  The inshore fishing produced some very good roosterfish action, along with jack crevalles, Sierras, (aka Spanish mackerel) and bonitos.  Excellent fishing conditions from inshore to offshore that provided clean water and good temperatures.

IZ Climate:  Air temps good at 71 nights and 92 daytime highs and a 65% humidity level average.  A mostly sunny week with a couple of partly cloudy dfays.

Sea Conditions:  Sea temps holding fairly stable at 82-83 degrees.  Surface breezes tropical and flowing mostly from the westerly directions and varied from calm mornings to about 8 mph by afternoons.  Very good fishing weather.

Best Fishing Area:  Starting at about 8-9 miles out front of the Bay area and working outbound from there.

Best Bait/Lures:  Fresh rigged baits were working best on the billfish and some of the dorado, too.  Tuna biting the feathers and other artificials and offering plenty of action for the anglers.

Bait Supply:  The bait supply, both fresh baits or rigging and live bait, were available and working well for the billfish and dorados and yellowfin tuna.

THE IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET

Captain Temo Verboonen, reportin in for the sportfishers from Zihuatanejo, said the fishing had slowed up due to the full moon on Monday and there were the have and have not boats this past week.  There were some that did well for their anglers and others that drew the proverbial "skunk" for the day.  The inshore fishing was plenty good for the jack crevalles and big eye jacks but have been moving around with the bait locations.  Valentin River was the best area last producing good catches.  Only a few roosterfish and Sierra showing up in the catch bag.  The coming week should change for the better with the growing of the darker moon phase on it's way.

IZ Climate:  A few sunny and warm days and a few partly cloudy days.  Air temps varied from 65 nights to 91 daytime highs and a 56% average humidity level.

Sea Conditions:  Temps are holding stable at 83-84 from inshore to offshore.  Tropical breezes flowing in from the westerly directions and varied from nearly calm mornings to 7-8 mph afternoons.  Near excellent surface conditions for the anglers.

Best Fishing Area:  Almost all of the fishing was accomplished within 15 miles of the entrance to Zihuatanejo Bay.

Best Bait/Lure:  Rigged baits were working best for the billfish but overall, the full moon took it's toll on the catching for many of the anglers.

Bait Supply:  The bait supply remained good enough, especially for the fresh caught rigging baits.  Live bait was still available for $5.00 per dozen.

Area Reporter:  Captain Temo Verboonen, Owner/Operator of Secuestro De Amor.
